A Square Peg in a Round Hole: How to Use a Refill Bar

Posted by Will Carius on

We’ve gotten some questions about how best to use our refill bars, so we thought it might be helpful to write out a short guide! Due to the fact that they don’t have self-contained packaging like our soap jars do, they do require a minor amount of work, but it’s only a minute or so. Here’s how to do it.

You will need:
  1. A refill bar of shaving soap.
  2. A container to hold said soap, such as an empty jar or even a soup bowl.

Step One

Open the soap package. Discard the wrapping. Alternatively, keep the wrapping if you only want to use half of the soap bar.

Step Two

Break or cut the soap bar in half.

Step Three

Flatten one half against the bottom of the container with your fingers, a spatula, or the back of a spoon.

Step Four

If using the other half right away, flatten it against the bottom of the container as well.

Step Five

Smooth out the soap to your preference. Wash your hands.

Step Six

If you need to shave today, lather up! If not, close your container (if it has a closure) and put it in a safe place for next time. If it doesn’t have a closure or cover of some kind, a stretchable material like plastic wrap will keep dust and hair out of your soap. However, if you choose to go this route, make sure that you give the soap ample time to dry in between uses to prevent microbial growth and other nasty consequences.

Note: Alternatively, you can just use the bar like a big soap stick and rub it against your stubble rather than loading your brush. From there, apply a wet brush to your face and build a lather as you would normally. It’s a helpful way to get a great shave even if you don’t have a lathering bowl or other container available, and is especially useful for travel.
