Ubrique Shaving Soap

Ubrique, named after the famed leather village in Andalusia, is an ode to Spanish leather (known as peau d'espagne in perfumery). Originally a scented oil rubbed into new leather to soften its smokey, animal aroma, peau d'espagne made the jump to fine fragrance in the early 20th century, where it was an intoxicating fixture for decades. In modern times, Spanish leathers have largely fallen out of favor in the fragrance world, so we decided that it was time to give them their proper due at Barrister and Mann.

Our version of this storied classic is a rich, tangy composition with notes of smokey leather, vetiver, rosewood, geranium, sandalwood, bergamot, tonka bean, and musk. It's comforting and manly, with a lovely, enveloping character that your dad or granddad might have worn down to the cocktail bar in his youth. It speaks of class, sophistication, and masculinity, and is perfect for those who want to set themselves apart from more modern, bitter leather fragrances. It may be one of the last of a dying breed, but Ubrique has style and poise in spades. Get yours.

Fantastic scent

As usual for Barrister and Mann this shaving soap works great, but it was the scent that intrigued me and enticed me to try something out of my usual rotation. When I opened the tub it didn't smell at all like I had thought it would from the description and I wasn't sure I was going to like it. Once I loaded up the brush and started to lather though, wow! The fragrance really opened up and changed into something really special. It might just be my new favorite and my wife really likes it too, which is always a plus

Barrister and Mann "Ubrique" Shave Soap Review – A Timeless Classic of Leather and Refinement

Barrister and Mann’s "Ubrique" is not just another leather-forward shave soap—it’s an olfactory time capsule, a masterful blend that whispers of old-world sophistication while standing proudly among the finest modern offerings. From the moment you open the jar, you’re met with a warm, enveloping aroma that evokes a well-worn leather armchair in a dimly lit cocktail bar, where gentlemen of taste once gathered over fine spirits and quiet conversation.

The scent itself is a rich, layered composition, with smoky leather taking center stage, smoothed by earthy vetiver and the gentle sweetness of tonka bean. Sandalwood and rosewood lend a creamy, woody depth, while geranium and bergamot provide just the right touch of brightness to balance the darker notes. Musk lingers in the background, adding a masculine warmth that rounds out the profile beautifully.

Performance-wise, Ubrique delivers in every way one expects from Barrister and Mann’s legendary soap base. The lather is luxurious—thick, slick, and cushioning, providing an effortlessly smooth shave with excellent post-shave hydration. The scent stays present throughout the shave, evolving subtly as the warmth of the lather releases new facets of the fragrance.

What sets Ubrique apart is its sheer class and presence. In an era where many leather scents lean sharp, modern, and sometimes harsh, this one remains dignified and timeless. It speaks of tailored suits, polished shoes, and quiet confidence. It’s the kind of scent your father or grandfather might have worn in his prime—when elegance wasn’t an afterthought, but a way of life.

For those seeking to separate themselves from the fleeting trends of contemporary perfumery, Ubrique is a masterpiece worth experiencing. It’s a rare gem, a dying breed of true masculine sophistication—but for those who appreciate style and poise, this one has it in spades.

Wow!! Spanish leather done right

This is one of the best leather scents I’ve ever smelled. This leather is a Spanish leather, and from first whiff it’s obvious. This is done so well. The soap makes one of the best lathers in the shave industry. You can not go wrong with this one. I will use this one year round, and I plan on getting the EDP as well. It’s so good

Captivating leather scent

A captivating scent, with the intensity of a leather, but also a delicate smoothness and creaminess. In addition to the leather, I get the vetiver, woods, and definitely the sandalwood, with everything wonderfully balanced. If you enjoy leather scents, but want to try something a little different, I recommend this.
